…as two-weeks ultimatum expires Tuesday, July 1

The University of Uyo is at the verge of complete shutdown given what is described as discrimatory approach on the proposed selection of Vice Chancelor.
In an SOS letter by ‘Critical Stakeholders’ jointly signed by its Chairman and Secretary (names withheld by us) and made available to Century Newsfront indicates that the University of Uyo community is about to face the mother of protest until the management reconsiders its stand on the election criteria of the Vice Chancelor.
It could be recalled that the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) had earlier issued a-two-week ultimatum to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, signed by its Chairman, Dr Ibiok Usendiah and the Secretary, Dr Solomon Bassey on June 13, 2025 demanded that the “university governing council withdraw the advertisement for the VC position and re-issue an inclusive call for applications that recognize both PhD and Fellowship qualifications, given that the advertisement specified a PhD as a requirement, which excludes clinical academics who typically hold Medical Fellowships instead of Ph.Ds”.
According to the SOS, the call was ignored by management and that led to the Clinical Lecturers in Uniuyo Medical school embarking on industrial action since Thursday 26th June. The two-week ultimatum given to the university’s governing council is set to expire in three days’ time, Tuesday, July 1st, and if their demands are not met, the lecturers have threatened to commence a full-blown strike action.
The release, which ended in strong-worded note reads, “this is a gross violation of our human rights, let they begin to bring armoured tank to parade this place, our decision must prevail and the consequent of this is that innocent, sick Nigerians would be affected especially the vulnerable ones because they may not be able to access full medical attention throughout the period of the industrial action”.
