History Maker! After 24 Years, Woman Emerges As Uyo Senatorial Candidate On DLA

…Princess Dr. Victoria Ibokette breaks new ground in Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections

A significant milestone has been recorded in the political history of Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, popularly known as Uyo Senatorial District, with the emergence of Princess Dr. Victoria Ibokette as the senatorial candidate of the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) for the 2027 general elections.

Her emergence marks a notable moment in the district’s political landscape, where senatorial representation over the past 24 years has been dominated by men. Her candidacy brings women’s leadership, inclusive representation, and renewed hope to the forefront of the district’s political conversation.

For her supporters, Princess Ibokette’s emergence represents more than a personal political achievement. It is a milestone for women and girls who aspire to leadership and a powerful statement that women can compete for and occupy positions of legislative authority.

History is unfolding. A new chapter in Uyo Senatorial District has begun.

Princess Ibokette formally received the DLA party flag and Certificate of Return from the party’s National Chairman at the party’s national campaign flag-off on Thursday,15th October 2026, marking her official entry into the contest for the Senate seat representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District.

Her emergence has renewed attention to the importance of broader female participation in elective politics and the need for inclusive, people-centred representation in Nigeria’s democratic institutions. The event also featured the presentation of Certificates of Return to other DLA candidates, including the party’s capacity governorship candidate, Obong Jeremiah Udo Akpan Udo, as well as Mrs. Mfon Udoh, contesting for the Itu/Ibiono Federal Constituency, and Sir Kingsley Udoh, contesting for the Ikot Abasi/Mkpat Enin/Eastern Obolo Federal Constituency, among others.

For Princess Ibokette, the senatorial ambition is presented as an extension of her commitment to education, youth and women empowerment, institutional advocacy, and grassroots development. Her supporters point to a record of community-focused initiatives and private interventions that they believe provide a foundation for effective legislative representation.

Among the achievements attributed to her is her advocacy towards facilitating the establishment of a Nigerian Press Council office in Akwa Ibom State. According to information provided by her supporters, the initiative helped bring the institution closer to the state, with potential employment and professional development benefits for indigenes.

In education, Princess Ibokette is reported to have supported more than 180 university students across Nigeria through scholarship arrangements, alongside dozens of secondary school students. These interventions reflect the emphasis she places on education as a tool for human development and social advancement.

She is also credited by her supporters with training and empowering hundreds of women and young people in vocational and entrepreneurial skills, including tailoring, catering, information and communication technology, and other income-generating activities. These initiatives form part of the case being advanced for her candidacy: that experience in community development, advocacy, and practical empowerment can contribute meaningfully to legislative service.

As the 2027 general elections approach, a key consideration will be how these experiences and initiatives can translate into effective representation at the National Assembly. Princess Ibokette’s proposed agenda places emphasis on quality representation, expanded educational opportunities, accessible healthcare, youth employment, women’s economic empowerment, rural infrastructure, and sustainable economic development.

Her ambition is to ensure that the needs and aspirations of the people of Akwa Ibom North-East are adequately articulated in national policymaking and legislative deliberations. The district comprises nine local government areas: Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan, Ibiono Ibom, Itu, Uruan, Nsit Atai, Nsit Ibom, Nsit Ubium, and Etinan. These communities have diverse development priorities, including employment, skills acquisition, infrastructure, access to public services, healthcare, and opportunities for young people.

Addressing these needs will require sustained consultation with constituents, evidence-based legislative proposals, effective oversight, constructive engagement with relevant government institutions, and transparent reporting on commitments and results. Princess Ibokette’s emergence has brought the question of women’s political representation into sharper focus within the district. Although women continue to play significant roles in community development, political mobilisation, enterprise, and public life, their representation in Nigeria’s elective legislative institutions remains limited.

For her supporters, her candidacy represents an opportunity to challenge established political patterns and encourage more women to participate actively in electoral politics.

They see her emergence as a potential source of inspiration for women and girls who aspire to leadership and public service, demonstrating that ambition, competence, service, and determination can create pathways to political participation.

Nevertheless, the ultimate test of her candidacy will be the confidence she earns from voters across the district. Her policy proposals, accessibility, credibility, understanding of local priorities, and capacity to pursue practical solutions will be important considerations as the election approaches. With the presentation of her party flag and Certificate of Return, Princess Dr. Victoria Ibokette has formally entered the race as the DLA candidate for Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District.

Her candidacy places people-centred legislation, inclusive development, women’s leadership, and accountable representation at the heart of the 2027 electoral conversation.

Whether her emergence will translate into electoral victory remains for the voters to determine. However, her candidacy has brought renewed attention to women’s participation in legislative leadership and the possibilities for a more inclusive political future.

As the campaign progresses, the focus will be on the strength of her vision, the practicality of her proposals, and her ability to convince the people that she can represent their interests effectively in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. For her supporters, this is more than a campaign. It is an opportunity to advance a vision of leadership anchored in service, empowerment, and progress. The history is unfolding. The journey to the Senate has begun.
