Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Earns PhD In Law, Inspires Youth with Academic Excellence

The Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has added another remarkable achievement to his profile, earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar during the institution’s 38th convocation ceremony yesterday.

Kalu’s doctoral thesis, titled “Evaluating the Efficacy of Anti-Terrorism Legislation in Nigeria: Human Rights Challenges and Lessons for Emerging Democracies,” was rated excellent for its depth, scholarly rigour and strong policy relevance. The research provides a comprehensive analysis of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism legal framework at international, regional and domestic levels, while emphasising the need to balance national security with the protection of fundamental human rights and the rule of law. It also offers practical recommendations aimed at strengthening legal institutions and promoting rights-conscious approaches to tackling terrorism in Nigeria and other emerging democracies.

In recognition of its significance, the Postgraduate College of the university showcased the thesis as one of its most outstanding works during an academic exhibition held on April 7, 2026. The exhibition brought together faculties and colleges to present impactful research contributions to society and national development.

Speaking on behalf of the PhD graduating class shortly after the convocation, Kalu described the doctoral journey as “demanding, humbling and transformative”. He noted that the achievement held deep personal meaning, as the University of Calabar had shaped his academic journey over the years, having earlier obtained both his LL.B and LL.M degrees from the same institution.

The formal conferment of the doctoral degree on April 11, 2026, marks a significant milestone in Kalu’s career, underscoring his commitment to intellectual growth, legislative development and nation-building. The celebration culminated in a reception at the Metropolitan Hotel Calabar, attended by a diverse gathering of public servants, academics, student leaders and other distinguished guests.

Reacting to the achievement, media professional, Dr Saviour Ekpe described the Deputy Speaker as an inspiration to the younger generation. He noted that Kalu’s ability to pursue academic excellence despite the demands of public office challenges the notion that busy schedules hinder intellectual development. According to him, the accomplishment serves as both a commendation and a call to action for leaders and citizens to embrace lifelong learning as a driver of national development and democratic progress.
