Nigeria’s energy and capital markets entered a significant new phase on Monday as Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals opened its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), giving members of the investing public an opportunity to take part in the ownership of one of Africa’s largest energy assets.
The public offer comprises 4.1 billion ordinary shares at ₦525 per share, with the base offer capable of raising approximately ₦2.15 trillion ($1.6 billion) if fully subscribed. The offer opened on September 14 and is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026.
Marking the commencement of the landmark offer, Dangote Industries Limited President and Chief Executive Officer, Aliko Dangote, rang the opening bell at the NGX trading floor in Lagos on Monday. The event underscores the growing connection between Nigeria’s industrial sector and its capital market.
The Dangote Refinery, located in Lagos, currently has a refining capacity of 700,000 barrels per day and has become a major player in Nigeria’s petroleum products market since commencing operations. The company plans to use the proceeds of the offering to support further expansion, with its targeted capacity expected to reach 1.4 million barrels per day.
Beyond the capital-market significance, the development has important implications for Nigeria’s energy and maritime sectors. Increased refining capacity and petroleum-product exports are expected to sustain demand across the wider logistics chain, including crude transportation, product tankers, marine terminals, port services and other maritime support activities.
The refinery’s growing role in supplying refined petroleum products also strengthens Nigeria’s potential as a regional energy hub, while creating opportunities for deeper integration between the country’s downstream petroleum industry and maritime economy.
The IPO is therefore more than a share sale. It represents a significant step towards broader public participation in a major Nigerian industrial asset, while providing capital to support further expansion of domestic refining capacity.
With investor attention now focused on the offer, its performance will be closely watched by the energy industry, capital-market operators and maritime stakeholders as Nigeria seeks to deepen local refining, strengthen energy security and expand its position in the regional petroleum-products market.
