… people take Akpabio for granted because of his simplicity – Eseme Eyiboh
In the wake of recent sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, his wife, Unoma Akpabio, has publicly defended her husband, vehemently denied the claims and insisted that such behaviour is entirely out of character for the Senate President.
In an interaction with the press, Mrs. Akpabio categorically rejected the accusations made by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan who recently came forward with allegations that the Senate President had made unwelcome advances on her.
Mrs. Akpabio stated that these accusations were not only baseless but also deeply offensive to the family. She reiterated that Akpabio is a man of integrity and honour and would never engage in such despicable behavior.
Mrs. Akpabio asserted. “Our home has always been open and welcoming to others, and I can assure you that when my husband is around, our house is always full of people—friends, family, and colleagues—because he is a man who values respect and decency above all else,” she added that she wondered how her husband would have made advances towards her in his house which is more like a market place when he is home.
She further emphasized that the Akpabio household operates on mutual trust, respect, and the highest moral standards, and there is no room for any form of misconduct or inappropriate behavior. She expressed disappointment at the timing of the allegations, noting that they appeared to be an attempt to tarnish her husband’s reputation at a critical time.
She further stated that the Senate President has dedicated his life to public service, and he has always been committed to the betterment of our nation. She recounted that since when Akpabio was the governor of Akwa Ibom State, he had many women in his cabinet and non had ever said anything about being harassed, adding that these false allegations are a direct attack on the Senate President’s character.
Despite the allegations causing significant controversy, Mrs. Akpabio maintained her stance, insisting that no evidence or witness has substantiated Natasha’s claims. She called on the public to focus on the Senate President’s work and leadership, rather than being swayed by unfounded accusations.
In an attempt to dig deeper into finding possible truth about the Senate President’s private lifestyle, one of the domestic staff who spoke on the condition of anonymity hinted that the Senate President does not have a lone house and as such the statement about being sexually harassed in Akpabio’s house is baseless.
The staff further stated that the Senate President’s arrival to his home state attracts entourage and the influx of not only Akwa Ibom people but other lawmakers would make him so busy to attend to all, possibly not even nursing in mind to sexually harass a fellow Senator.
Meanwhile, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, the Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the President of the Senate, in an interview with the Independent, published on March 4, 2025 further proves the allegation statement wrong.
In his words, “Well, take this because you may not have it from anywhere but I’m telling you as an aide to Senator Godswill Akpabio. He is a very strong family man; he’s a family man that if you get close to him, you will want to go back for lessons on how to manage a family. He loves his wife, he loves his children, he loves his name but because of the generosity of his heart and acts, and his human personality, people take him for granted.
“This is a society that if you give a gift; if I give you a souvenir, the first question the onlooker will ask is how come that man gave her this souvenir but Akpabio is very generous in acts and in heart. We are living in a society where perception has dominated realities but that is fine to the extent that we should also do well like in this discussion; people are talking about sexual harassment by Natasha and nobody’s talking about enforcement of the law.
“What Natasha did in the floor of the senate is not what is expected of a distinguished senator; remember the word ‘distinguished’ connotes decorum, integrity, elegance. Will you consider that unruly behavior as an outcome of a person that thousands of people voted for or who came to the senate by any means or through any means elected? So there’s an expectation placed on her that I expect the society to interrogate why she conducted herself in that manner.”
