Nigerian comedian and actor, Woli Arole has ignited a wave of reactions on social media following his criticism of women who opt for surrogacy despite being medically fit to carry a pregnancy.
In a post shared on his Instagram page on Monday, Arole expressed strong disapproval of the growing acceptance of elective surrogacy, describing it as a product of “wokeness” and modern ideologies that, in his view, stray from divine intent.
He wrote, “Listen carefully. It is a blessing for a woman to carry her baby in her womb. That’s how God wants it. Don’t let wokeness derail you. Unless for medical reasons, she can adopt options like surrogacy, IVF and all.”
While Arole acknowledged the legitimacy of assisted reproductive methods such as surrogacy and IVF in cases of infertility or serious health conditions, he criticised the use of these options solely for convenience or personal preference. “You can’t say, ‘my body, my decision. I don’t feel like carrying a child. I want surrogacy.’
No!! Your body is God’s temple!!” Arole said.
He further stressed that the womb is a divine gift with a specific purpose, and choosing to bypass it without medical justification undermines that purpose. “Don’t let wokeness derail you. Your body is God’s temple. Surrogacy is not something you just choose!! There’s a reason God gave you a womb,” Arole added.
His remarks have since generated widespread discussion online, attracting both support and criticism. While some praised him for upholding traditional values, others challenged his views, pointing to women’s rights, bodily autonomy, and the evolving nature of family structures in modern society.
