Akwa Ibom State possesses enormous potential to become one of Nigeria’s leading industrial destinations. Beyond its peaceful environment, strategic location and investor-friendly disposition, the state already has one critical asset that many states are still striving to establish—the Industrial city along the Itam axis of Uyo by the AKTC park. The challenge, however, is not its existence but its level of development.
The ongoing construction of roads within the Industrial city by the administration of Governor Umo Eno deserves commendation. Good road infrastructure is the foundation of every industrial estate, facilitating the movement of raw materials, machinery and finished products. This intervention is a clear indication that the government recognises the importance of industrialisation as a catalyst for economic growth. It is indeed a step in the right direction.
However, road infrastructure alone cannot transform the Industrial city into a thriving industrial hub. To unlock its full economic potential, the state government should embark on the next phase of development by providing the essential facilities that define a modern industrial layout.
The first priority should be the fencing of the entire Industrial city. A secured perimeter will prevent encroachment, safeguard government assets, enhance security and inspire confidence among investors. Every successful industrial estate across the world operates within a controlled and protected environment, giving businesses the assurance that their investments are safe.
Equally important is the provision of constant and reliable electricity. Manufacturing thrives where power is stable. By ensuring uninterrupted electricity within the Industrial city through dedicated power infrastructure or public-private partnerships, the government will significantly reduce production costs and make Akwa Ibom a preferred destination for manufacturers.
Security is another indispensable requirement. A well-equipped security system comprising security posts, surveillance facilities, adequate street lighting and regular patrols will guarantee the safety of factories, equipment, workers and finished products. Investors naturally gravitate towards environments where security is assured.
The Industrial city should also be equipped with other supporting infrastructure such as water supply, drainage systems, telecommunications facilities and efficient estate management. Once these basic amenities are in place, the government can allocate serviced plots to local and international companies willing to establish manufacturing plants and processing industries in the state.
The economic benefits of such an investment are far-reaching. New factories will create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for Akwa Ibom people and other Nigerians. Small and medium-scale businesses will spring up around the industrial estate to provide support services, thereby stimulating commerce and expanding the state’s economic base. At the same time, government will enjoy increased internally generated revenue through taxes, levies, land charges and other economic activities associated with industrial production.
Industrialisation remains one of the most sustainable pathways to economic transformation. Akwa Ibom already has the vision and the location. With the ongoing road construction providing a solid foundation, the next logical step is to complete the Industrial city by providing perimeter fencing, reliable electricity, robust security and other critical infrastructure. Doing so will position the state as a major manufacturing destination, attract private investment and accelerate economic growth for the benefit of present and future generations.
This version presents the road project as a commendable first step while strategically urging the government to complete the Industrial city with fencing, electricity, security and other infrastructure needed to attract industries and drive economic transformation.
