What began as a friendly birthday visit to celebrate the week-long birthday anniversary of a great matriarch, Her Excellency Princess Dr. Victoria Ibokette, D.Peace, FICRPC, FICSP, African Union Ambassador, American-Trained Security Expert, Minister of the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ, diplomat, politician and humanitarian, the President of Princess Victoria Ibokette Foundation in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Monday, August 10, 2026, gradually transformed into a wide-ranging political discussion on the future of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.
The visitor, Obong Jeremiah Akpan, governorship candidate of the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), paid a birthday visit to Princess Ibokette at her hometown in Uyo alongside with his trusted allies, joining the growing stream of dignitaries and well-wishers celebrating the renowned humanitarian, peace advocate and women empowerment champion.
The atmosphere, which initially centred on birthday felicitations, goodwill messages and reflections on Princess Ibokette’s contributions to society, later assumed a political dimension as the two personalities engaged in discussions on leadership, governance and the future direction of the state and country.
The conversation focused particularly on the need for political leaders and those entrusted with positions of authority to recognise the enormous responsibility that comes with leadership and use such positions to serve the people. Obong Akpan and Princess Ibokette, both philantropists reportedly shared concerns about the need for the current generation of leaders to do the right thing, empower the right people and create opportunities for capable citizens to contribute meaningfully to governance and development.
They also emphasised the importance of setting the record straight in public leadership, stressing that political offices should not merely be viewed as positions of privilege but as platforms for service, accountability and positive transformation. The discussion further touched on the future of Akwa Ibom State, with emphasis on the need for visionary leadership capable of harnessing the state’s human and natural resources for the benefit of its people.
For Nigeria, the conversation centred on the broader question of how the country can build a leadership culture that prioritises competence, integrity, inclusion and genuine empowerment rather than personal interests. While the visit was primarily a birthday engagement, the political discussion provided an opportunity for both personalities to exchange views on the direction of governance and the responsibility of political actors in shaping the future.
Princess Ibokette’s week-long birthday celebration has continued to attract personalities from different walks of life, reflecting the goodwill and recognition she has earned through her humanitarian activities, peace advocacy and commitment to women’s empowerment.
The visit by Obong Jeremiah Akpan (popularly known as OJA) therefore, added another dimension to the celebration, bringing together birthday goodwill, leadership reflection and political discourse in what turned out to be a significant encounter on the future of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.
