In every democracy, the true worth of a legislator is not determined by the number of years spent in office or the titles attached to the office, but by the quality of representation offered to the people. The electorate expects lawmakers to be visible, accessible, vocal in parliamentary debates, proactive in sponsoring people-oriented bills and motions, and committed to attracting development and opportunities to their constituencies.
In recent years, many Akwa Ibom people have expressed disappointment over what they perceive as the poor performance of a significant number of the state’s representatives in the House of Representatives. While occupying strategic seats in the Green Chamber, several lawmakers have remained largely unnoticed in legislative debates, have sponsored few landmark legislative initiatives, and have not effectively leveraged their positions to attract meaningful dividends of democracy to their constituents.
Against this backdrop, two federal lawmakers out of ten have consistently distinguished themselves through exceptional service, legislative activism and impactful constituency representation. They are Hon. Rt. Unyime Idem, representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency and Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo (aka Mcaire), representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency. Their performances have earned them admiration from many Akwa Ibom people who believe they have redefined what effective representation should look like including those outside of their Federal Constituency.
Hon. Unyime Idem has built a reputation as one of the most visible and people-oriented legislators from Akwa Ibom State. His constituency empowerment programmes have benefited thousands through the distribution of business grants, vocational training, educational support, agricultural inputs and tools for artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs. His intervention in youth empowerment has created opportunities for many young people to become self-reliant instead of depending solely on government jobs.
Beyond empowerment, Hon. Idem has facilitated employment opportunities for qualified constituents into federal ministries, departments, agencies and other government institutions. He has also championed infrastructure projects, educational interventions, and community development initiatives that have directly improved the lives of his constituents, send constituent members abroad for specialized and further studies is unmatched. His active participation in legislative business, including sponsoring bills and motions and contributing to national debates, has further demonstrated his commitment to quality representation.
Similarly, Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo (aka Mcaire) has emerged as one of the most outstanding first-term legislators in the National Assembly. Despite being relatively new in the Green Chamber, he has earned widespread recognition for his energetic representation, accessibility to the people and unwavering commitment to constituency development.
Mcaire has consistently prioritized youth and women empowerment through the provision of grants, training programmes (within and outside the country as well), educational assistance and support for small businesses. He has facilitated employment opportunities for many qualified indigenes into federal agencies and institutions, thereby giving hope to numerous families. His interventions have strengthened public confidence in the ability of elected representatives to positively impact the lives of ordinary citizens.
On the legislative front, Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo has remained active in parliamentary proceedings, contributing to debates on issues of national importance and sponsoring legislative initiatives aimed at improving governance and the welfare of Nigerians. His courage in speaking on matters affecting his constituents and the nation has endeared him to many observers who see him as one of the emerging voices in the House of Representatives.
One remarkable quality shared by these two lawmakers is their accessibility. They have maintained close contact with their constituents, listened to their concerns and responded with practical interventions. Their offices have remained open to the people, making representation a living reality rather than a campaign slogan.
Their commitment also extends beyond politics. Through scholarships, educational assistance, healthcare interventions, support for religious and community organizations and humanitarian programmes, they have demonstrated that leadership is fundamentally about service to humanity.
While no public office holder is beyond criticism, the performances of Rt. Hon. Unyime Idem and Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo (Mcaire) stand out when compared with the expectations placed on federal legislators. Their records have shown that purposeful leadership, dedication and sincerity of purpose can produce tangible results even within the limitations of public office.
The people of Akwa Ibom should encourage and support legislators who are making meaningful contributions to the development of their constituencies and the state. Commending excellence is one way of inspiring others to raise their standards of performance.
As the political future unfolds, both Rt. Hon. Unyime Idem and Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo (Mcaire) appear destined for greater responsibilities. Their performances in the House of Representatives have established them as leaders with the capacity to serve at even higher levels. Whether in executive or legislative leadership, they have demonstrated qualities that suggest they are prepared for greater national assignments. Coincidentally, these two mega legislators are from the same senatorial district led by the uncommon President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio.
If they remain focused, consistent and committed to the ideals of selfless service, the future will undoubtedly be brighter. Their journey in public service is only beginning and their achievements today may well become the foundation for even greater accomplishments tomorrow.
For many observers, these two lawmakers have become shining examples of what effective representation should look like. They have shown that the mandate of the people is a sacred trust that must be honoured through performance, integrity, accessibility and measurable impact. Their names will continue to feature prominently whenever the conversation turns to outstanding representation from Akwa Ibom State in recent times. But if no legislative improvement among the remaining eight representatives in Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika; Eket/Onna/Esit Eket/Ibeno; Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium; Ikot Abasi/Mkpat Enin/Eastern Obolo and Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara. Others are Itu/Ibiono Ibom: Oron/Mbo/Okobo/Udung: Uko/Urue-Offong/Oruko and Uyo/Uruan/Nsit Atai/Ibesikpo Asutan Federal constituencies, I may be forced to x-ray their pay including constituency allowances they received and what they claimed spent on the people.
